William Palfrey William Palfrey
I caught up with Ben to talk video games, ramen and how he's settled into our new Maintenance Engineer role. The outcome? You'll love playing Witcher 3, you'll love the ramen at Hakata Gensuke in Victoria Park and you'll love life at OSIT. 🎮🍜👨‍💻💙

Ben Carey - Life at OSIT-min

So, Ben, how long have you been with us here at OSIT?

It's been about 4 months now!

Can you share with us what where you doing before you joined OSIT?

I sure can, I was studying and had just completed my TAFE qualifications. I was looking for my first serious IT role while working a casual job.

Cast your mind back 4 months -  can you share with us what is was about OSIT that made you want to apply and accept the position?

I appreciated the human approach to IT that OSIT embraces, and I felt that this was a fantastic opportunity to learn and grow.

Tell us about your day to day, what does a typical day look like behind your keyboard?

To begin with, the main focus of my role was learning new techniques and then applying them with the maintenance tasks. My day to day can differ a lot depending on what's happening with our support teams, but on a normal day at the office I work closely with our Business Services and Support Teams running through the assigned maintenance tasks for that month.

You mentioned that you felt OSIT was a fantastic opportunity to grow, what are you aiming to achieve in the next 12 months at OSIT?

In the next 12 months I aim to improve my technical skills through the internal training academy and external courses. I'd like to achieve my first Microsoft certification in server 2016, and hopefully make the move up to the Support Engineer position.

Do you have a mentor or role model at OSIT? And if so, what’s the best piece of advice you’ve received from them?

Yes - Neale has been the primary mentor figure for me, which is really nice to have as he's also my manager.
Neale's provided me with so many pieces of advice over various topics, but the main one would be, don't be afraid to ask anyone if you aren't sure.

In your opinion what is something that is uniquely OSIT?

The most unique thing about OSIT is definitely the team! I was warned by a few people before starting that IT companies can be univiting environments, but the team at OSIT are the best people I've ever worked with, everyone is friendly, super helpful and always up for a laugh.

I couldn't agree more, what's surprised you most about working at OSIT?

Honestly the team members. They are so helpful and actually willing to assist you whenever you need it.

Having been through the recruitment process yourself, can you share one insider tip for an applicant looking to get their foot inside the door at OSIT?

Sure! I'd suggest to display your willingness to learn and grow in the IT industry. Personal growth is a primary focus of every role here at OSIT and something that we pride ourselves on.

And finally, can you share one thing you love about working at OSIT?

I love how much I've already learned in my time here, and how much I feel supported by the entire company to continue learning and growing my career.

Get a career that generates bigger opportunities. And broader smiles :)
